The Religious Feasts are moments of great importance in the cultural structure of any society and so were with the Celts. From mythology, priests’ manuscripts written after de Ireland conversion, roman description and archaeological researches we know four great festivals celebrated every year: Samhain, Imbolc, Beltaine and Lughnassad. These four festivals had a critical significance in the social organization and a profound relation with the support of the trifunctional organization once these occasions were parts of an annual reconstruction of the mythological meaning covering the themes of all the three parts involved, for they are related to divinities, kingship and power renovation and natural cycles involved in the production.
We also have some historians and archaeological information about other four festivals, performed in the solstices and equinoxes, although the mention of them in the monastic relates and mythology were rare. Unfortunately, we cannot be sure of the exact reasons. What we can say for certain is that they existed, especially if we take in account the importance of megalithic monuments that were largely used in Celtic culture for the astronomical precision, although they were earlier construction of their occupation.
As these festivities had different functions in the Celtic world I will divide them in two groups “The Ancient Great Feasts”, those religious cults linked to the social organization and preserved in myth, and “The Ancient Mysteries Feasts”, those religious cults related to astronomical events and monuments.
The Ancient Great Feasts
The Ancient Mysteries Feasts
It is important to remember that even “The Ancient Great Feasts” were determinate for natural events, for all these days happened in the first signals of the seasons coming. But these religious ceremonies shared their space with legal assemblies and events related with all the classes, they were feasts which involved all the community and strengthen the trifunctional structure what is possible not to have been the case of the “The Ancient Mysteries Feasts” which seems to have little or no political significance, they seems to be connected with productive and astronomical cycles more than social maintenance, maybe this can be the reason why they didn’t appear in mythic narratives.
