oath2

There are two oak trees near my home, and in the last year, after a huge storm I went there to see if there were acorns in the ground. To my surprise, there was a bifurcated oak branch of almost two meters right under one of them. I accepted it as a gift of Manannán, for it was a perfect staff, with no need to be changed.  This in an instrument I have been using in my rites and I used it at this ritual to represent my connection with Manannán Mac Lir.

I choose three very special deities to serve, Manannán and Brigid were already my patrons and now I added Macha to my personal devotional work. I decided to give a special gift for each one, as well for the Ancestors and for the Sidhe and the spirits of the Land, to each one a silver Jewell, with the exception of the Sidhe and the spirits of the Land that I gave a non-metal Jewell, made with natural elements.

Special gifts offered:
Manannán Mac Lir – Silver fibula
Brigid – Silver triskle
Macha – Silver ring
Ancestors – Silver earings
Sidhe and spirits of the land – Fine necklace made of wood and mother-of-pearl.

Usually, I do the rites in Portuguese, which is my native language. However, since the Oath Rite is a private ritual and I would have to write it in English for my DP, I decided to do it in English, and it was amazing. I felt much easier to find the words and to remember of what I have planned to say than the normal. I invited two members of my Protogrove to be my witnesses. They helped me in maintaining the fire and took the photographs as I performed the rite.

As I placed myself in front of the altar to start the prayers, a frog sang three times and it started to rain. It rained from the moment I started the rite until the moment I ended it. There was no rain after or before, which I acknowledge as a good sign, since Manannán Mac Lir was one of the guests. The frog sang again three times as I closed the rite, as a response to my knocks.

The rite was intense and I could feel each energy and guest. In addition, the rain created a kind of isolation between us and the rest of the world; it was like if we were in the otherworld. I think the oath was a success for I had many signs of approval during it and I was able to feel every one of those I invited surrounding me.

As a main sacrifice, I tried to recreate the Celtic sacrifice of wine, but taken to the fire instead of broken with a sword. This was a powerful moment for I placed an oak set of ogham inside it to read the entrains of the amphora, and I believe that this was the best sacrifice I ever did.

Oath Rite

As I arrived at the park, I asked for authorization to the local beings to do my rite, making offerings to the fairy three near the entrance.

Beginning

Knock nine times with the staff at the ground

Sovereignty of the land

Sovereignty of the land, you who grow the crops and breed the nature,
I see you in the sky above me.

Sovereignty of the land, you who crowned every king of Ancient times,
I see you at the ground under my feet.

Sovereignty of the land, you who is the bringer of the mead,
I see you around me.

Imbas Forosnai

O Sacred Brigid, mother of the fili,
I seek for the Imbas forosnai as I call your name!

O Sacred Brigid, sovereign of the land,
I seek for the Imbas forosnai as I call your name!

O Sacred Brigid, Ollam among every poet,
I seek for the Imbas forosnai as I call your name!

(Offerings) Brigid, accept my offerings!

Purification

Use a silver bowl with water to represent a well. Throw the water at the face and wash the hands at each stanza of this chanting:

From the Well of Slane to the Manannán’s realm,
I bath myself in the Sacred Waters to purify my body.

From the Well of Segais to the Manannán’s realm,
I flow with the Sacred Waters to purify my mind.

From the Well of Connla to the Manannán’s realm,
I drown at the sacred Waters to purify my soul.

From well to well, from sea to sea,
Sacred Waters teach me to be like your path, pure, clean and true!

After the wine evaporates completely, take the amphora from the fire and read the ogham sticks that are left.

As the fire goes ending, the gates are closing
Cause I am sailing back
To the world of the mortals.
